Gustatory Rhinitis Treatment

Posted in Rhinitis

Rhinitis is a disease commonly characterized by running nose and the patient inner side of the nose gets constrained with blood vessels. The blockage has to be removed surgically when the condition becomes severe.

The types of rhinitis include infective, non allergic and allergic. Non allergic rhinitis is further divided into different types depending on their cause including automatic, vasomotor, hormonal, drug induced atrophic, gustatory rhinitis and rhinitis medicamentosa.

Gustatory rhinitis can be defined as a non allergic rhinitis that relates to food and alcohol consumption. Most of the time it can be related to as a food allergy but necessary tests should be undergone before one can rule the problem out as gustatory rhinitis. It is very difficult to diagnose gustatory rhinitis (a non allergic rhinitis) as the test results for it show no allergic reaction either , the diagnose requires good physical examination and an observation of the patients eating activities..The mucus formed inside the nose dries up lining the inner nose and causing further blockage and irritation to the patient.

The causes of this type of rhinitis include consumption of certain kind of foods, especially hot and rich in spices one.

The disease is observed in both adults (especially that smoke) and children. Food with preservatives and dyes may also cause gustatory rhinitis.

The symptoms include:

A Runny and stuffy nose whenever the patient eats alcoholic and spicy food. Followed by a lot of sneezing. The nasal discharge of the person when hit by the effects of gustatory rhinitis is clear and watery.  And it is common for the patients to experience post nasal drip that means that a sensation of fluid being poured I the back of the throat ids experienced. The symptoms can be observed year round but the weather conditions can always worsen the effects.

The nasal discharge during gustatory rhinitis is the dilation by the blood vessels that line in the inner side of the nose.

The reactions caused by non allergic rhinitis are almost the same as that of allergic rhinitis that may or may not  end in a running nose. The best way to avoid the adverse effects of gustatory rhinitis is to avoid its causes meaning to avoid too spicy and alcoholic food but it may not be possible for the patient to avoid such food. In that case medications can be taken   like nasal steroids, antihistamine sprays, and oral decongestants. Oral decongestants are not recommended until antihistamine and glucocorticoid fail to show recovery results and shall not be used more than two or three days because their continued use can cause another kind of rhinitis (rhinitis medicamentosa)

While for the patients that suffer from constant dripping and post nasal drip can recover from the drying effect of anti-choline nasal sprays. Theses sprays have been very productive and helpful for such patients.

Rinsing of the nose by salty water once or twice a day can help reduce the effects of gustatory rhinitis .a variety of devices are present in the market for the purpose of saline wash of the nose. This is called as nasal irrigation or nasal lavage and proves very effective for the cure of the problem.

The patient always has the option to consult a doctor and get a good prescription that may give recovery results more efficiently and in less time.

Some patients recovery over time but for some its effects are lifelong and they need to take medicine on daily bases.

Vaccination by allergy shots and immunotherapy has proved to be in effective for the cure of gustatory rhinitis.
