Atrophic rhinitis is a chronic nasal disease, which is associated with progressive atrophy of the nasal mucosa and bones of turbinates, which are lying under. Presence of viscid secretion is also noticed and this dries very fast, forming crusts, which have foul smell. This bad smell is also known as ozaena.

Due to this problem, one side of the cavity of the nose becomes large and that side is severely affected. Very fortunately, patients do not know about the stench emitting from their nose, since this is related with anosmia. Generally, women are affected by atrophic rhinitis, though this disease starts from puberty. Heredity is the main reason for this disease, though there are many other reasons for people to have atrophic rhinitis. Many international immunologists feel that atrophic rhinitis is an autoimmune disorder.

Generally, a particular type of atrophic rhinitis affect people in particular part of the world and the other type attacks the people from other parts of the world. When people have this problem, they feel very uneasy to breath and they feel their nose is completely blocked. If they want to remove the crusts, bleeding would be there and they should not do this.

They have to consult their ENT specialist for this disease. There are specialist, who have specialized in this disorder and they should be consulted. Usually, physicians start their treatment with some medications to clear the nasal blockage. Nasal irrigation should be done in the initial stage. Normal saline is used for this purpose. Removal of crusts is performed with alkaline solution. This would avoid bleeding, while removing crusts from the affected area. The growth of foul smelling proteolytic organisms should be controlled with glucose and glycerin by applying to the nasal mucosa. This medical treatment should be taken regularly for a few days. Physicians know well about this and they also know about the response of their medication and accordingly they would change their medications.

Most of the patients feel very comfortable after their treatments with medication. Patients, who are suffering from severe deviated nasal septum, may also suffer from atrophic rhinitis and they have to undergo surgical treatment. Different surgical procedures are performed to the patients, who have atrophic rhinitis. There are many experienced surgeons, who perform surgeries for this problem. Diagnosing is very important in the initial stage, since there are different types of atrophic rhinitis.
