Treating Allergic Rhinitis

Allergic rhinitis is a common chronic respiratory illness that affects ones significantly. People with sensitive immune system when come in contact with an allergen like pollen , dust or animal dander experience an allergic inflammation  this is called a allergic rhinitis and is also known as poll enosis and hay fever.


Before the treatment starts there are certain factors should always be kept in mind these factors are:

  • The age of the patient
  • The condition of the patient.
  • The patient’s diet
  • The patient’s activities


The allergic reaction can be transformed from generation to generation.

To prevent  perennial allergic reactions always remember to cover your pillows and mattress with a dust mite cover , avoid carpeting in your home  , keep away from pets  , try using an air purifier and wash your toys ( stuffed toys ) in hot water once a week.

Once the patient reaches his physician it becomes his duty of educate the patient with maximum understandable information about the problem. And then suggest medication to cure the disease. The medications are as following:

Nasal corticosteroids:

These are nasal sprays that help in the reduction of the swollen nose helping the allergic person to breathe at ease again. Some of the sprays are beclomethasone, fluticasone, mometasone and triacinolone.


There are two types of antihistamines. They are as following:

  • Over the counter antihistamine is short acting and are recommended to be used when the symptoms are moderate in nature. They may cause sleepiness.
  • Prescription antihistamine is a longer acting drug for the allergic rhinitis and has to be taken once a day only.


They are mostly used with antihistamines and are frequently available in the market. They are of oral and of nasal type.

Leukotreine modifiers:

Our body produces leukotreines that are the inflammatory chemicals produced by the body. The use of leukotreine modifiers inhibits the production of leukotreione the inflammatory chemical. They do not cause sleepiness. And are advised to be taken once a day.

Cromolyn sodium (nasalcrom):

This medicine inhibits the production of histamine and helps avoiding from the runny nose and the terrible swelling. They need to be used several times a day.

Nasal atropine:

It also renders the running nose in the allergic person and is usually used by patients with large prostate.

Eye drops:

For starchy and red eyes certain eye drops like antihistamine eye drops and decongestant eye drops are used.

Other treatments:

For children over the age of 7 and adults allergic shots can be taken. Nasal irrigation or sometimes known as nasal lavage has been proven effective to cure the allergic reactions.

Nutrition and diet plan:

Sometimes the food that one intake can be harmful for that persons health meaning that even food can cause allergic reactions. The food that cause allergy should be cut down from the diet plan immediately. Some of the chemical in food that cause allergic reactions are lactobacillus acidophilus, queretin , spirulina  and vitamin C.


Some natural means to cure the effects of the allergy and they end in no side effects. They make the body strong against the allergic reactions.  Some of the herbs are:

  • butterbur
  • goldenseal
  • stinging nettle( should never be taken without the advice of the physician)

Chinese medicine:

Biminne a Chinese herbal medicine for the cure of rhinitis allergic reactions. Biminne includes the following herbs:

  • Chinese skullcap
  • Ginko biloba
  • Horny gart weed
  • Japanese apricot etc

Some studies have shown that acupuncture can be helpful in the cure of allergic rhinitis but not all studies have suggested the same.
