The Discomfort of Sinus Pressure at Night

When one catches an infection or a virus it will lead to either having a running nose or it would trigger an allergic reaction. Headaches are the first symptoms that one will experience, followed by a runny nose, redness of the eyes and nose, swollen facial areas and sinus pressure.

Sinus pressure occurs when your nasal cavities are swollen and tight because of the bacteria accumulated in the area. This now limits your breathing capabilities because of increase mucus production and narrow nasal passageway. When this happens, pressure is created in the base of the nose and near the eyes which results to sinus pressure. Sinus pressure is not only irritating but also painful especially during the night.

There are various remedies and ways to help you temporary eliminate sinus pressure, either at home or with the use of prescribed medications. Some of the effective methods are:

  • Steam – this is probably the first aid that you should do since it is easy to perform and you don’t need anything particular to achieve your goal. Steam is very helpful in eliminating blockage and swelling of your nasal cavities, it will help loosen up the harden mucus plus it create relieve to the patient. You can either take a 20-30 minutes bath with warm water, be sure that the water is warm enough so the steam can clog your mirror, that’s the temperature that you are aiming for. Soak yourself and just relax in the warm water while you inhale the steam. Another effective method is pouring the warm liquid in a container with a narrow opening. Inhale the steam through the opening while holding one nostril close. Do this to both sides and whenever you want relief. Another effective method is by using a basin and creating a “steam tent”. Place your head over the basin with warm water and with the use of a towel, cover your head to create a tent so that steam won’t escape the area and just breathe. Do this in a comfortable position.
  • Nasal sprays – an effective remedy to sinus pressure are nasal sprays or saline solution. Saline solution is water – salt solution that is used to help clean your nose. Use is 2-3 times a day or whenever you need the comfort. Nasal sprays are not addictive so you don’t have to worry, plus it doesn’t create any side effects. Sprays are often more effective than pill form since they provide relief faster for the patients.
  • Decongestants – decongestants helps in de-clogging mucus accumulation in your nose and will also cure headaches and sneezing that you are also experiencing with sinus pressure. Take a decongestant before you go to bed as to help you sleep comfortably through the night.
  • Antibiotics – because sinus pressure is often caused by allergies and infections, antibiotics are the great medication to use. They will help with killing virus and bacteria that causes the infection in your nose. Take as prescribed by the doctor.
  • Elevation – whenever you experience sinus pressure at night it is very helpful to use 2-3 pillows to elevate your head when sleeping. Elevating the head will help with the mucus secretion thus clearing your nasal cavities which results to breathing easier than the usual.

These are just the basic remedies to help you eliminate sinus pressure at night. You can ask some of your friends and family if they know other techniques that can help you with your problem but remember that if you are experiencing sinus pressure longer than 2 weeks, it is time to consult your physician for a proper diagnosis of your problem.
